The house was originally built by West Coast Mission as a Nurses Cottage and  was used as a Nurses Cottage until the Nurses Cottage, now known as Hallin, was built. At that point it passed to Hector Mackay.

Hector Mackay and his wife Lily Mackay adopted a daughter, Rhoda. Rhoda emigrated to New Zealand and after Hector and Lily's death the house passed to Lily's brother-in-law, John Maciver.

John Maciver had previously been living at The Shieling, North Tolsta with his second wife, Christina Mackay and their children. The couple settled at 2 School Road with their younger children.

In due course 2 School Road passed to a man from New Tolsta.
