Cros

Cross is a village, part of the larger settlement of Ness at the Butt of Lewis in the far north of the island.

By the time of the first national census of 1841, Cross comprised the church and manse, a school, 15 crofting tenants and three other houses. In 1849 another five crofts were added. These 20 croft are recorded here as Old Cross.

In 1855 there was a general reallocation of lands throughout much of Lewis and in Cross the number of crofts was increased to 31 partly by subdivision. In 1868 five crofts on the moor side of the main road were transferred from Swainbost to Cross.
