At Barvas, in 1858, he married Isabella Morrison, 15 Port of Ness. John and Isabella settled at 19 Port of Ness and they had five children.
John was widowed in 1875 and that year he married Ann Macdonald, 3 Lionel the widow of Angus Gunn, 11 Port of Ness. John and Ann had five children.
