769: Malcolm Smith

Malcolm (born 1844) was a son of John Smith and Mary Macleod, 4 Earshader. Malcolm inherited the croft 4 Earshader.

At Carloway, in 1880, he married Margaret Maciver from Callanish. Malcolm and Margaret lived at 4 Earshader and they had a daughter, Ann.

Malcolm was the subject of many of John Smith, the Earshader Bard's, poems. According to oral tradition the first time John put pen to paper was as a reaction to some slight on Malcolm's part towards John. He was also mentioned in the song Oran nan Rodan, by Donald Maciver Domhnall Bàn, 14 Hacklete, as the ferryman who would take the rats from Hacklete to the mainland
