125082: Miraculous Escape on the Lemreway Bus

Bus Crash in Marvig

Twenty passengers, the driver and conductress of Mr Mitchell’s Lemreway bus had a miraculous escape when the bus went off the road about half a mile from Marvig and turned a complete somersault.

The accident happened quite close to a loch with a depth of four feet at the edge. There wasn’t a pane of glass left whole in the bus which was practically cut in two. “It is impossible to understand how everyone in it was not killed or drowned”, was the comment of one who saw the scene not long after the occurrence.

The bus left Stornoway about 6.30 p.m. and the accident happened about nine. All those aboard suffered shock and minor injuries but were able to clamber out through the side of the bus. Dr Macdonald, Marvig, was on the scene not long after the accident and rendered first aid to all of the passengers.
