120164: HMT Empire Windrush (188561)

The MV Monte Rosa was one of a group of five Monte Class Passenger Ships built by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg in 1930 for Hamburg Sud.

She was requisitioned by the German Navy in 1940 and used as a Troopship during the Second World War.

After the War the vessel was taken by the British Government as a prize of War, renamed HMT Empire Windrush and used as a Troopship for returning  troops and as a Passenger Ship for Post War immigrants from the British Caribbean who later were called the “Windrush Generation”.

In March 1954 the HMT Empire Windrush caught fire and sank in the Mediterranean.
