120892: SS British Transport (127458)
The SS British Transport was a Cargo Steamship built by Sir Raylton Dixon & Co, Middlesbrough in 1910 for the Empire Transport Co.
On passage from Brest to Archangel on September 11, 1917 SS British Transport was attacked by u-boat SM U-49 in the Bay of Biscay. A five hour battle ended when SS British Transport sunk the U-boat with the loss of all hands. This was the first sinking of an enemy ship by a Merchant Vessel.
Numerous members of the Crew were decorated for sinking the U-49.
