117588: School, Tolsta Chaolais

This school was located in the middle of the village and was built in the 1850’s.  It is likely that the headmaster and any teachers were housed within the building.  It continued to be in use after Doune School opened in 1880.

Alexander Macdonald (1794-1879) was the first headmaster at the school.  When he retired, he was replaced by John Montgomery from Leurbost.

After 1861, John Macleod, from either Isle of Harris or Isle of Skye, came to the school as a teacher.

At the present time, the building is used as a Mission/Meeting House.
