47263: Ladies Highland Association School, Lemreway

A school run by the Ladies Highland Association was established in Lemreway sometime between 1854 and 1861, in what is now the Mission Hall in the village. It closed with the opening of the new school in 1881.

Known teachers were:

Murchadh Ban from Uist

John Macleod in 1861, born Inverness-shire, c1825

Donald Smith in 1871 (aged only 18). The 1871 census indicated there are 62 scholars in the village.

Mr D Mackay, the last teacher, who afterwards became a minister andserved for many years in the Highlands and Islands as an evangelist.
