The original tenant of 4a North Tolsta, Donald Murray, emigrated in 1853 after occupying the croft for only a short period. The croft, together with 2 North Tolsta, then passed to Donald Campbell.

Only Donald Murray and his family are linked to the record for 4a North Tolsta. Occupants from 1853 onwards are considered to have lived at 2a North Tolsta, which was the number given to the croft when it once more became a separate croft in 1890.
