Battle of the Somme

Battle of the Somme

The Battle of the Somme was a protracted and costly offensive that began in the Somme valley of Northern France on 1 July 1916 and continued until November, with little progress and heavy casualties on both sides, under the appalling muddy conditions of trench warfare. British losses on the first day alone are put at nearly 60,000.
