Battle of Sheriffmuir

Battle of Sheriffmuir

The Battle of Sheriffmuir took place in the Ochil Hills, Perthshire on 13 November 1715, between the Jacobite forces under the Earl of Mar and Hanoverian forces under the Duke of Argyll. The Jacobites had the advantage of numbers but the outcome was indecisive; both sides claimed victory.

Lewismen, under the Earl of Seaforth, fought with Mar on the Jacobite side. Seaforth fled to France and had to forfeit his title and estates, but he returned secretly to Lewis and took part in the Battle of Glenshiel.
