83484: Portrait of John Smith, the Earshader bard

A studio portrait of John Smith sitting with an open book in his hands. John Smith (Shonnaidh Phadruig) the Earshader Bard was born in 1848. John’s parent’s were not married; he was brought up by a nurse-maid from Uig. John studied medicine in Edinburgh University but whilst there contracted tuberculosis so returned home. Much of his bardachd was written around this time. He died 31 December 1881 and is buried in Little Bernera. His manuscript is in Bernera museum.
