108892: Castle Tioram, Argyllshire

Castle Tioram lies within Moidart, part of Garmoran, traditional lands of Clan MacRuairi. Sited on the tidal island Eilean Tioram, the castle would have controlled access to Loch Shiel.

Passed from Christina MacRuairi to her brother Ruairi and then to his children, it was Amy MacRuairi who is believed to extended the castle, building a tower house against the eastern curtain wall.

Caisteal Tioram eventually passed to Amy’s son Ranald MacDonald, progenitor of Clan Ranald, whose ancestral seat it became.

Further information can be found on the Canmore website, and a particularly detailed account of the castle is available on this page from the Moidart Local History Group.
