Burma, officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, is a country in Southeast Asia; its capital city is Naypyidaw. Britain conquered Burma in the 19th century and the country became a British colony. Burma was a major battleground during the Second World War, suffering invasion by Japan. Burma regained its independence in1948, initially as a democratic nation and following a 1962 coup, as a military dictatorship. The dictatorship formally ended in 2011, being followed by a period of civil war and a military coup in 2021.
