106912: Begnigarry, Lewis

In the 18th century, Begnigarry was part of a tack that also included the then township of Lower Shader, which was nearer the shore than the present village. Begnigarry was situated to the south of the township and was a separate unit, having subtenants like most other tacks. By 1841 it included five households, one belonging to the farmer, three to subtenants, and one to an agricultural labourer.

In 1851, when Lower Shader was relotted, Begnigarry  – which lay at its western end – became incorporated within it. The Begnigarry farmhouse was described in the Ordnance Survey name book of c 1850 as ‘the best built house in Sheadair Iochdrach’, having both a window and a chimney.
