10775: Isle of Eriskay

The Isle of Eriskay lies between South Uist and Barra in the Outer Hebrides. It is closer to South Uist and is connected to it by a causeway that was opened in 2002.

Eriskay was one of the locations where Bonnie Prince Charlie went ashore before the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. More recently, it became renowned for the sinking of the steamship The Politician which went aground in the Sound of Eriskay in 1941, complete with its cargo of whisky. These events inspired the book and film Whisky Galore.
