15001: Holm, Lewis

Tolm; Thuilm

Satellite Image

A small settlement, with a jetty, on the east coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Holm is located 2½ miles (4 km) southeast of Stornoway. The surrounding area is also known as Holm, with Holm Bay and Holm Island lying a half-mile to the southwest and Holm Point beyond. The Beasts of Holm, dangerous rocks lying just offshore at the entrance to Stornoway Harbour, brought the demise of the HMS Iolaire in 1919, with the loss of 205 men. A memorial on Holm Point commemorates the disaster.

Holm (Gaelic: Tolm) should not be confused with Tolm, a small island south west of Crowlista.
