67355: Baile, Berneray

Baile is located within Ruisgarry. Its name can be translated as village.

Located here is croft 8 Ruisgarry and a cluster of cottars’ homes. Most are now empty, but two have been converted into use as a hostel, run by the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust.

One of the houses was the home of Berneray bard Malcolm MacAskill, and the book Orain Chaluim, which contains his work, reveals an insight into the lives of the islanders living in this area.
