52693: Loch Stiapabhat

Loch Stiapabhat (2.5ha) near Port of Ness is a Local Nature Reserve, the first for Lewis, and as it is the first fresh water found by birds migrating from Iceland and Greenland in autumn, it attracts a large number of species.

The name means “loch of the soaking”, referring perhaps to the practice of soaking flax prior to spinning. The Nature Reserve has its own webpage.
