Comann Eachdraidh Chàrlabhaigh (CEC)

Carloway Historical Society

Comann Eachdraidh Chàrlabhaigh (Carloway Historical Society) was formed in 1987, covering the area from Tolsta Chaolais to Dalmore on the west side of Lewis. It is based in the old school canteen at Carloway Primary School (now closed). Access is by appointment, but from time to time and as funding allows, the society takes on employees to progress particular projects and on these occasions, the museum can be open from 9am to 5pm.

The historical society collects artefacts, archives, photographs and information relating to the area with collections including croft histories and oral history recordings. A yearly magazine is produced entitled Sop às gach Seid. This is published on Carloway Show day, on the first Wednesday of August, when the society has an open day; it is available in PDF upon application to the Society.

Each New Year’s Day, the society organises a walk to the top of a local hill, where the Carloway flag is unfurled at a historic cairn. Up to 200 people attend annually. Occasional events and exhibitions are also held to commemorate historical events.
