Comunn Eachdraidh Ùig (CEU)
Uig Historical Society
Comunn Eachdraidh Ùig (Uig Historical Society) was established in 1984 and covers the area from Scaliscro to Brenish in the Uig district of Lewis, including the islands off the west coast. The area includes Ardroil, where the Lewis Chessmen were found.
The society operates a museum that is based within the Uig Community Centre. The museum display includes artefacts, photographs, maps and a recreated blackhouse kitchen from around 1919. It also provides space to access the extensive archive of genealogies and local history files compiled by the membership.
Well-informed local volunteers run the museum. They welcome visitors and will guide them to some of the many sites of historical interest in Uig. Please note that the museum's telephone line is not staffed full time so enquirers are advised to use its email address in preference.
The museum is open as follows:
April: Monday to Saturday, 12.00-16.00
May to September: Monday to Saturday, 12.00-17.00
October: Monday to Saturday, 12.00-16.00
Other times: by appointment.
