102883: Mary Maclean

Mary Maclean (1842-1906) was from 18 South Bragar. She was the second wife of Kenneth Macleod, 22 Garenin.

It is said that Mary’s first husband was taking home peats in a creel when he saw some of the village men trying to pull a plank of wood to shore. Wood was very precious to the islanders at that time and he went to help them. While they were struggling with the wood a freak wave washed over them and Mary’s husband was drowned.

It is thought that Mary had one daughter with her first husband and at least three children with her second husband.
