John was born in 1889, the son of Donald MacLeod and Margaret MacLeod of Quarry and later 24 Borve. He worked as a fisherman, later emigrating to Vancouver and becoming a captain for Canadian Pacific, working on the Great Lakes. He and his wife Bella had a son.
