Neil, born 1819, was the son of Lachlan MacDonald and Ann MacAulay of Scolpaig. Neil married Christina MacLean, also of Scolpaig. Together they were to have four children. They lived for a while in Griminish before moving to Borve Farm, where Neil worked as grieve, during the 1850s. The site of their home was later known as Tobhta Nèill ‘ic Lachlainn.
