105538: John MacAskill

John, known as Iain Bàn, was born in 1850, the son of blacksmith Neil MacAskill and his wife Ann MacKillop of Borve. His father died when Iain was about 3 years of age and the family moved to ‘house 1’ Rubha Mor where they lived as cottars.

At North Uist in 1880 he married Mary Ann MacDonald of Scolpaig. They lived close to his mother, at ‘house 3’ Rubha Mor, and he worked as a fisherman. Together he and Mary Ann were to have ten children before his death in 1899. He drowned near Gniopa, along with his brother John and two nephews.
