Murdo was the son of Alexander Campbell and Christina MacLean. His father was the Free Church missionary on Berneray between 1918 and 1926, and the family stayed at the Free Church Manse.
Murdo became a minister, married Mary Fraser from Strathpeffer and settled in Inverness.
