Ann MacCuish, born during the 1820s, was the daughter of tenant farmer Angus MacCuish and Catherine Paterson of Harris, then, by 1830, in old Borve, Berneray. However, in 1854 tenants in Borve were cleared from their land in order to make way for Borve Farm. The family became cottars in Backhill. By 1901 Ann was living in her own household alongside her sister Flora at ‘house 4’ Backhill. Ann worked as a wool spinner.
