107174: Alexander Crotach MacLeod

Alexander or Alasdair Crotach MacLeod (1450-1547) was the 8th Chief of the Clan MacLeod. He was hump-backed (Gaelic: crotach) following an injury in battle.

Alexander’s ancestral home was Dunvegan Castle, where he built the Fairy Tower. Living to a great age, he passed the chiefdom to his eldest son William, retiring to live at Rodel, Harris. There he built St Clement’s Church on the site of an earlier church, and was buried within a carved stone tomb.
