John (born 1829) was a son of Donald Smith and Annabella Nicolson, Laxay. His father was the joint Tacksman of Laxay with John Smith. John's parents died young when the children were small. His siblings, Margaret, Alexander and Malcolm were raised by their Uncle, Donald Nicolson, 5 Old Gravir and it is believed John lived there too. He does not appear on the Census until 1851 living with his sister, Margaret at 5 Crossbost.

In Lochs, in 1854, he married Catherine Macsween from 26 Ranish. The couple settled at 53 Leurbost and they had seven children. In the 1881 Census Catherine is a widow.
