108971: John Duns Scotus

John Duns Scotus (c1265-1308), the philosopher and theologian, is believed to have been born in Duns, Berwickshire. According to Trinity Temple: Its Abiding Influence, a friend of the author Rev Norman MacDonald visited the tomb of Duns Scotus in Bavaria: 

‘and there, written on the stone he read that Duns Scotus received his education in Trinity Temple, Carinish… After leaving Carinish, Duns joined the Franciscans at Dumfries c1280’

Duns Scotus was ordained in Northampton in 1291, later teaching in Oxford and Paris and finally in Cologne, where he died in 1308.
