Donald MacLeod

Donald, born 1829, was the son of Neil MacLeod and Catherine Morrison of Ruisgarry. Following his father’s death in 1845, Donald moved to Stornoway with his mother and most of his siblings. He later emigrated to Canada, where he was living in the 1850s. There he became known as Dòmhnall an Talmhainn Fhuair, Donald of the Cold Country.  He returned to Harris by 1865 when he married Mary Ann MacKinnon of 1 Flodabay, with whom he was to have eight children. When his sister Effie and her husband moved from a cottar’s house on 1 Flodabay in 1875, the house was passed to Donald and Mary Ann instead. Donald and Mary Ann also lived in Borve, Harris at one stage.
