Effie, born 1838, was the daughter of Angus MacAskill and Effie Munro. The family moved from Borve to Ruisgarry sometime during the 1830s.  In 1845, with the re-organisation of the Ruisgarry crofts, the family was moved to 19 Kyles Scalpay, where Effie’s mother died in 1848. Her father subsequently remarried and emigrated to Australia.
