John, born about 1784, was the son of Alexander MacLeod and Effie Paterson of Borve and Ruisgarry. John married Margaret MacLeod, with whom he was to have four children. John was a farmer, holding a tenancy in Borve. He is listed in the rental roll for 1830 paying annual rent of £5.6s. The family moved to Deiraclete during the 1840s.
