John Alexander  was a son of John Mackenzie and Mary Ann Smith, West End Calbost Common. The family moved to 12 Calbost and later to Cameron Terrace.

At Blythswood, Glasgow, in 1963, he married Fiona Macdonald, 30 Lower Shader. John Alexander and Fiona settled at the croft at 3 Leurbost which was  passed to John Alexander from his sister Christina. The couple had a son, Iain.
