119720: John Macaskill

Iain Peigi Iain

John Macaskill (1883-1931) was a son of Margaret Macaskill, 17 Gravir. John was born at 7 Marvig, the croft of his maternal great grandparents. He lived with his mother and grandparents at 17 Gravir.

The family were listed on the 1891 Census at Gravir and later moved to Havelock Lane, Stornoway. He wrote several Gaelic songs.

At Pollockshields, Glasgow, in 1919, he married Christina Macleod, 13 Leurbost. At that time they were living at 64 Plantation Street, Govan.

Our records show that John emigrated to Australia and was drowned in the Hunter River, Newcastle, New South Wales in 1931 but Bill Lawson believes the couple lived in Glasgow. Perhaps he died at work in the Merchant Navy.
