John Angus was a son of Angus Matheson, 5 Brenish and Margaret Macritchie, 3b Aird Uig. He was born at Seaforth House, 23 Scotland Street, Stornoway and moved with his family to 20 James Street.

John Angus was a merchant seaman most of his life and was unmarried. He died in Aberdeen in the late 60s.
