16209: John Mackenzie

John Mackenzie (born 1826), son of Alexander and Ann Mackenzie, lived at 1 Aird Uig. In the census he gives his place of birth as Dunnet, Caithness, as did his sister Betsy, though it’s not clear why the family was there.

He married Mary Morrison, Coulregein, Stornoway in 1849, and had at least three daughters, Johanna (1851), Annabella (1855) and Margaret (1859).

In 1859 the birth certificate of his sister Betsy’s son Angus indicates that he was born in his uncle John’s house in the town, and in 1861 they are living in Cromwell Street.
