Neil was born in Lochs and settled at Drovinish some time in the middle of the eighteenth century. He was the tacksman in Little Bernera from the late 1770s until he was succeeded by his son Donald (they shared the rental in 1807). He married Catherine Macaulay the daughter of Donald Macaulay, tacksman in Linshader.
