John (1845-1873) was a son of Donald Macphail and Christina Nicolson, 9 Old Gravir. The family obtained 19 Gravir in the 1852 Lotting.
At Stornoway, in 1871, he married Isabella Munro, 15 Grimshader. John and Isabella settled at 16 Gravir and they had a son, John.
John Senior was one of the men lost at sea in North Minch accident.
