42302: Norman Nicolson

Norman (1771-1860) was a son of Malcolm Nicolson and Rachel (surname unknown). Norman was one of the first tenants on Vuia Mhor at the beginning of the nineteenth century. He married Marion Macdonald; they had six children.

By 1841 Norman was living in Carnish (possibly where his family had come from in the first place), and by 1851 he was widowed and living with his daugher Margaret and her family in Carnish.  Margaret and her family emigrated to Canada (without Norman) in 1855 when Carnish was cleared; Norman moved to Àirigh na Bèiste near Stornoway to live with his son Malcolm.

Tradition says that Norman had changed his family name from Macritchie to Nicolson.
