Mary, born in 1872, was a daughter of George and Margaret nee Macdonald, 2 Crulivig. She was employed at Grimersta lodge as a laundry-maid when she met her future husband Alexander Mackay, a gillie from Callanish.
Mary had five of a family; Angus Ferguson, born before marriage (never married), Bella (never married), Joan (never married), Margaret Mary ‘Maggie Mary’; married Alexander Macdonald from Inverness and raised four children, and Georgina; married twice with four childen from the first marriage and five from the second.
