47920: Kenneth Macpherson

Kenneth was born c 1814 in Stornoway, son of Roderick Macpherson (Rory Ban), a cooper at 28 New Street, and his wife Christian Macdonald. He initially worked as a cooper too but soon became a teacher and catechist, working at Portvoller before moving to Cross. Kenneth married Ann nee Smith from Strome and 20 Valtos; with issue.

He died in mysterious circumstances in July 1886 at Galson; evidently he set out for a walk and simply disappeared. He was believed drowned and a headstone commemorating himself, his wife and his youngest son, also Kenneth (1866-1895) is in the old cemetery at Habost, Ness.

An account of Kenneth’s life is given in Norman Macfarlane’s Men of Lewis.
