He served with the Mercantile Marine Reserve during the First World War and is mentioned in Loyal Lewis: Roll of Honour 1914-1918.
In Stornoway, in 1924, he married Christina Ann Finlayson, 6 Lemreway. John Murdo and Christina Ann settled at 22 Gravir and they had two children.
John Murdo was widowed in 1932 and in Stornoway, in 1946, he married Murdina Macarthur or Macleod, 20 Cromore. John Murdo and Murdina had three children.
