51243: Torquil Macleod

Torcuil Dhòmhnaill Thorcuill

Torquil (1892-1943) was a son of Donald Macleod and Margaret Morrison, 6 Garyvard.  He ran a shoemaker's shop from a steading on the croft at 6 Garyvard.

Torquil served as a Sergeant in the Seaforth Highlanders in the First World War. His name is mentioned in  Loyal Lewis: Roll of Honour 1914-1918. 

On April 26, 1924 he emigrated to Canada on the SS Marloch from Stornoway to Quebec. 

He returned to Lewis and in Lochs, in 1929, he married Margaret Macdonald, 47 Crossbost. Torquil and Margaret settled at 47 Crossbost and they had a daughter. Torquil carried on his trade at Crossbost and also worked as a Postman.
