5992: Ann Smith
Ann Smith (1901-1987), daughter of Angus Smith and Alexanderina Macdonald, Seaview, Keose became a certified teacher after attending Jordanhill College, Glasgow. She was the assistant teacher in Aird School, Point. In 1935 she married Gordon Urquhart of Invergordon; the couple had a daughter.
Ann entered local politics and became the first and only female Provost of Stornoway in May 1965. She held numerous other offices and was awarded an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) and the Freedom of the Burgh of Stornoway in 1973. Urquhart Gardens in Stornoway is named in her honour.
