65958: Murdo Matheson

Murdo was a son of Dugald who was married to a daughter of Murdo Mackenzie third of Achilty. He came to Lewis in the mid 1600s when his first cousin, Murdo Mackenzie fifth of Achilty, was chamberlain and it’s generally accepted that he’s the ancestor of most of the Lewis Mathesons. According to family tradition he settled first at Ardroil (around the same time as George Mackenzie settled at Baile-na-Cille) and later relocated to Arnish where he was tacksman.

Murdo was married twice; from his first marriage he had a daughter who was married to Alexander Mackenzie (son of Hector of Mellon, Gairloch), he then married Christina Macaulay, Kneep with whom he had issue;

1 John – ‘Iain Arainis’,

2 Donald – ‘Domhnall Ban’

3 Roderick

4. Alexander

5 Murdo (or Malcolm) – who lived at Kneep

6 A daughter who married John Macleod ‘Iain mac Thorcuill’ of the Macleods of Pabbay
