67351: John Paterson

John Paterson, born about 1786, was the son of Samuel Paterson and Rachel Campbell of Borve. John lived with his family in old Ruisgarry and is shown on the rental roll of 1830, paying rent of £5.8.0. With his first wife, Janet Ross, he had four children. On her death he married Mary MacKillop, with whom he had three children.

In the 1850 relotting he obtained the croft at 1 Ruisgarry (Sandhill). He farmed there until 1854 when he was removed to Baile. There he became a ferryman, working the route between Berneray and Harris with his boat An Curaidh. He also sailed to Pabbay, assisting the local whisky trade.

In 1861 Duncan Boyd was lodging with him.
