69153: Norman MacAskill

Norman MacAskill, youngest child of Neil MacAskill and his wife Marion, was born in about 1848 in old Ruisgarry, moving later to 4 Ruisgarry (Tarraloch), which was lotted to his father in 1850.

Norman became a shopkeeper on Berneray, and later emigrated to Cape Breton. He set up a business and was elected a local councillor in Framboise. He married a cousin, Catherine MacAskill, at Loch Lomond.

His first cousin Malcolm MacAskill wrote a song for him (simply titled Oran) in 1895, which was published in Orain Chaluim. The footnotes relate that Norman died in his shop in 1916, whilst measuring cloth for a customer.
