Roderick MacKillop was born in old Ruisgarry in about 1843, before moving to 5 Ruisgarry with his parents Donald MacKillop and Marion MacLeod in 1850. He worked as a shoemaker.

Roderick married his wife Mary MacAskill in August 1869, and they presumably lived on his parents’ croft. Roderick and Mary’s first child was born in 1870, dying of measles just before his first birthday. Their second son, born in June 1871, died after only 10 days. Later that year they emigrated to Grand River, Cape Breton, along with his parents.
